2016 Chevrolet Cruze Manual First Drive: Can a Stick Shift Make the Cruze Sporty?

2016-Chevrolet-Cruze-1.4T-Manual-PLACEMENT

-

Those seeking a compact car with a stick shift usually fall into one of three categories: Budget buyers on the prowl for the best deal (perhaps subscribing to the theory that manual transmissions yield better fuel economy), game-show winners, and those looking for a more involving, fun driving experience. We fall into the last camp, and the excellent driving dynamics and transmissions in the Mazda 3, the Ford Focus, and the new Honda Civic make them natural targets for our affection. Chevrolet not only has the price shopper covered with the manual-only, base model of the Cruze (the path chosen by Subaru, among others), it deserves credit for also offering the stick on nicer models at upper trim levels. Either way, for the purposes of this review we're more interested in the transmission's fun potential. READ MORE ››

Study: Younger Generations Trust Self-Driving Technology

CARS.COM - Younger car owners are ready to make the move into autonomous cars, according to J.D. Power and Associates' 2016 U.S. Tech Choice Study.

Related: What Makes an Autonomous Car?

When it comes to trusting self-driving technology, millennial car owners rank the highest in J.D. Power's study with 56 percent. Generation Z car owners are a close second at 55 percent, though it should be noted that only a portion of this generation, who were born between 1995-2015, are eligible for a driver's license.

The percentages decline as the generations age: 41 percent of Generation X car owners say they'd trust autonomous tech, baby boomers ring in at 23 percent and pre-boomers come in at 18 percent. The study is based on an online survey of more than 7,900 people who bought or leased a new car in the last five years. The survey was conducted in February and March 2016.

"This level of trust is directly linked to the level of interest in a new technology among automobile buyers," said Kristin Kolodge, executive director of driver interaction and HMI research at J.D. Power, in a statement. "Acceptance can be increased with exposure over time and experience with automated technologies."

The study also found that 27 percent of Generation X, 18 percent of millennials and 11 percent of Generation Z respondents "definitely would not" trust autonomous technology. That number increased to 39 percent for baby boomers and 40 percent for pre-boomers.

While we're years away from self-driving cars, the technology - sensors, radar, light detection and cameras - is part of today's vehicles. J.D. Power found that smart headlights, night vision, lane change assist, traffic jam assist and predictive vehicle control are among the autonomous vehicle building blocks that appeal to today's shoppers.

One thing the generations agreed upon in the study are concerns about protecting privacy and the potential for these systems to be hacked or hijacked - or even for the systems or car to crash.

2016 Ford Focus Electric Tested: Could You Live Without Gas Stations?

2016-Ford-Focus-BEV-PLACEMENT
-Ford's announcement that the 2017 Focus Electric will sport an EPA-rated driving range of 100 miles couldn't have come at a less opportune time: Here we are driving and testing a '16 model with a range of 76 miles when, in only a few months, it will be obsolete. Old kit. An iPhone 4 in an iPhone 6S world. If we were seriously considering the purchase of any electric, it would seem worth waiting for the '17 Focus to arrive because we'd either get a third more range with the new one or a screaming deal on a leftover '16 model. (We'd also get a chance to comparison shop the Focus against the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt and its claimed 200-mile range.) READ MORE ››

Mitsubishi: U.S. MPG Numbers for 2013-2017 Cars Correct

CARS.COM - As Mitsubishi faces scrutiny from both the EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on its fuel-economy numbers, the automaker defended its gas-mileage numbers today, saying an internal audit of its 2013-2017 model-year vehicles sold in the U.S. revealed none of the issues that affect international vehicles.

Related: Report: EPA Orders More Tests of Mitsubishi Cars

In a statement issued to Cars.com today, Mitsubishi said its "findings confirm that fuel economy testing data for these U.S. market vehicles is accurate and complies with established EPA procedures."

Mitsubishi has confirmed "irregularities concerning fuel consumption testing data" for some 625,000 minicars sold worldwide. The automaker told us April 20 that it wasn't aware of any affected U.S. cars, but regulators have asked for more information.

NHTSA requested additional information, a spokesman confirmed today. The EPA and California Air Resources Board also have ordered Mitsubishi to provide information on its U.S. vehicles, as well as conduct more "coast-down" testing for its U.S. cars, EPA spokeswoman Laura Allen told Cars.com.

As for the coast-down testing, Mitsubishi is in the process of acquiring that data, which spokesman Alex Fedorak said corresponds to how the EPA gets its "road load" measurements.

"An entirely different system is used for the United States market to determine what the EPA calls Road Load Coefficient, strictly adhering to EPA procedures," the automaker said in the statement. "The data generated is then independently verified for its accuracy before being submitted to the EPA for their fuel economy testing."

Mitsubishi has shared this information with regulators, including the Department of Transportation, which is NHTSA's parent organization.

Mitsubishi said it's assigned a committee of external experts to investigate the issue. The automaker said it would share the results once the investigation is complete.

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Spy Photos: New Platform, Less Bigness for the Next Equinox

2018-Chevrolet-Equinox-(spy-photo)-PLACEMENT
-What It Is: The next-generation Chevrolet Equinox crossover, seen here in prototype form and covered up for testing. Today, the Equinox exists in a gray zone in terms of size, bookended by mid-size two-row crossovers like Hyundai's Santa Fe Sport and Ford's Edge and by the overflowing compact class where the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5 live. On entering its third generation, the Equinox will shrink somewhat to more comfortably take on the compact contenders it currently competes with on price. READ MORE ››

Mitsubishi Admits to Miscalculating Fuel Economy Since 1991

Mitsubishi XR-PHEV II concept

-

In most ordinary automotive scandals, it takes months to years to uncover what drove executives to make poor decisions. Mitsubishi has taken only six days, and it's just started digging.

-

Last week, Mitsubishi admitted to falsifying fuel-economy data on four Japanese-market kei cars, including two branded as Nissans. As of Tuesday, Mitsubishi said that starting in 1991, it had developed its own “high-speed coasting test” that spit out more optimistic numbers than the one mandated by the Japanese government. Oddly enough, among the many numbers for tire-rolling and air resistances calculated by Mitsubishi's test, engineers selected a “relatively low value” for one trim of those late-model cars to “give the appearance of greater fuel consumption.” This was done, Mitsubishi said, to match higher fuel-consumption targets revised during the car's development. Consequently, Mitsubishi then calculated fuel consumption for three other trims, including one with a turbo engine and another with all-wheel drive, based on that flawed initial data.

-

We're a little confused at what's happening, but so is Mitsubishi. The company said that in 2001, an internal test showed that there was no more than 2.3-percent deviation between Mitsubishi's coasting test and the official coasting test and that despite an employee manual produced in 2007 that explicitly required the government test, Mitsubishi continued using its own version.

-
--
-

Mitsubishi is looking into other Japanese and export models, which means its U.S. division could come under the microscope. A three-member committee of independent Japanese attorneys, including a former Tokyo city prosecutor, is leading the investigation and plans to release complete results in three months and divulge “who is responsible.” Scandal or not, that's at least speedy by corporate standards.

Is Memorial Day A Good Time to Buy A Used Car?

CARS.COM - If you're thinking of using your long Memorial Day weekend next month to shop for a used car, that time might be better spent barbecuing. According to automotive research website iSeeCars.com, Memorial Day is one of the worst days of the year to get a deal on a car.

Related: How to Inspect a Used Car

In fact, it appears you may as well just take the whole summer off and wait until at least fall. By then, the current model year will have ended and car owners in large numbers will have begun trading in their vehicles for new ones, iSeeCars said, pointing to its survey of 40 million used-car sales from 2013 to 2015. The study, which defined a deal as 5 percent or more below market value, concluded that September through February were the best months for a bargain - with particular savings to be celebrated on the holidays within that period.

The biggest "holiday" for used-car deals as defined by iSeeCars? Black Friday - meaning that if you play your cards right you can snag a sweet deal on a car to go back and pick up that 70-inch flat-screen TV you got for $14 at Target at 12:01 a.m. According to their calculations, you're 33.1 percent more likely to get a used-car discount on Black Friday, followed by other November holidays Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day.

The top 10 holidays for used-car shoppers to score a deal, followed by the percentage by which the number of deals on that holiday exceeds the average, are:

10. New Year's Day, 15.8%

9. Halloween, 18.8%

8. New Year's Eve, 21.3%

7. Christmas, 21.4%

6. Christmas Eve, 28.7%

5. Martin Luther King Day, 29.4%

4. Columbus Day, 30.5%

3. Thanksgiving Day, 30.6%

2. Veterans Day, 32.5%

1. Black Friday, 33.1%

All of those holidays, you'll notice, occur from October through January. March through August is the most expensive time of year for used-car shoppers, according to iSeeCars. On the Fourth of July you should just sit tight and enjoy the fireworks because dealers aren't exactly exploding with bargains; research shows there's 28 percent less of a chance of getting a good price on a car.

Here are the top five holidays not to celebrate with a used-car purchase, with percentage less of a chance of getting a deal:

5. Memorial Day/Father's Day (tie), 18.3%

4. Good Friday, 21.6%

3. Easter, 22.2%

2. Mother's Day, 27.5%

1. Fourth of July 28%

Phong Ly, iSeeCars.com CEO, explained that the study's purpose was to provide shoppers with a broad period of time during which their time is best spent hunting for deals. So-called conventional wisdom could lead consumers to pay more than they need to. For example, iSeeCars determined that contrary popular belief, the first day of the month on average offers 8.5 percent more deals compared with the 5.6 percent of the last.

"It's always nice to save money, and when you are buying something as expensive as a car, saving even 5 percent of your purchase, or $952 off the average price of $19,040, can really add up," Ly said in a statement. "But it's hard to get the savings if you can't find the car you want, so we assessed which times of the year had the greatest number of deals."

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S: First Look

Competes with: Audi TT, Chevrolet Corvette, BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLC

Looks like: a hardtop 718 Boxster

Drivetrains: 300-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder or 350-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter flat four (718 Cayman S); six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission; rear-wheel drive.

Hits dealers: November 2016

CARS.COM - Just a few months after unveiling the new 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster convertible at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, Porsche has unveiled the new coupe version: the 2017 718 Cayman and higher performance 718 Cayman S. Featuring the same engines and styling updates as the Boxster, the new 718 Cayman also sports a new price, and for the first time ever, it's priced below the Boxster convertible.

Related: More Porsche News

Exterior

The Cayman receives styling updates similar to the Boxster's. A new front bumper and lower air intakes, slimmer bi-xenon headlamps and integrated LED daytime running lights all combine to give the Cayman a wider, more substantial look than the outgoing car. In back, a new set of LED taillights with a distinctive floating four-point light signature and a gloss-black strip that incorporates the Porsche logo complement the wider stance of the car. The big difference from the Boxster is the fixed coupe roof, which provides a different silhouette than its 911 big brother.

Interior

Inside, the 718 Cayman shares the same updates seen on the 718 Boxster. The upper portion of the dashboard has been redesigned, including new air vents, while the steering wheel is taken from the ultra-exclusive 918 Spyder supercar. An eight-speaker audio system and Bluetooth connectivity are standard, with USB, Apple CarPlay and Porsche Car Connect multimedia systems optional.

Under the Hood

Powering the new 718 Cayman are the same pair of brand-new turbocharged flat-four engines first seen in the 718 Boxster. The base car gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 300 horsepower and 280 pounds-feet of torque, while the 718 Cayman S gets a larger 2.5-liter unit making 350 hp and 309 pounds-feet of torque. When combined with the dual-clutch automatic transmission and the Sport Chrono Package, Porsche reports a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 170 mph for the 718 Cayman, and 4.0 seconds and 177 mph for the 718 Cayman S.

The new 718 Cayman also gets some suspension updates, including a retuned sport suspension with a quicker steering rack adapted from the 911 Turbo and wider rear wheels with new tires. An adjustable suspension (Porsche Active Suspension Management, or PASM) is available, as is Porsche Torque Vectoring. The Sport Chrono Package allows for adjustment of various vehicle settings from the steering wheel controls, adding an Individual setting to the previously available Normal, Sport and Sport Plus modes. New, larger brakes are standard, with the base 718 Cayman now using the brakes from the previous-generation Cayman S, while the 718 Cayman S now uses the four-piston calipers from the 911 Carrera combined with thicker front rotors.

Both the 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S are on sale right now, with deliveries expected in late November 2016. The base car has a starting price of $54,950 including destination fee, while the Cayman S starts at $67,350.

BMW Creates Funky Long-Wheelbase X1 for China

P90216813

-

Back in the good old days when America was the world's biggest car market, everybody wanted us to know we were special.

-

-

All of our domestic automakers built cars just for us, while those in Europe and Asia pandered to our every whim. Can you buy a Tundra in Tokyo? No. See?

-

That was then. Today, China is the world's biggest car market and every manufacturer worthy of its proving ground goes to great lengths to find out exactly what Chinese customers like, and stretches its resources to deliver it to them.

-

What Chinese customers like is long. They like their small sedans stretched, they like their large sedans stretched and they like their SUVs stretched.

-

BMW knows this. One out of every four first-generation X1 crossovers ended up in China, and that's why it opted to unveil its stretched second-generation X1 in Beijing today.

-

To be built in its joint-venture plant at BMW Brilliance in Shenyang, this X1 will deliver the much cleaner, purposeful look of the second-generation X1 to the Chinese market and combine it with a choice of three gasoline engines and in both rear- and all-wheel drive models. All stretched.

-

The Chinese X1 has grown 4.3 inches longer, and all that extra length has been devoted to the rear seat passengers and their knees. It's now 179.7-inches long and 63.7-inches tall and remains 71.7-inches wide.

-

P90216815

-

The big upgrade, then, is that the rear seat passengers get another 4.3-inches of knee room, or more if they slide that seat back as far as it goes, sacrificing some luggage space. Even with the sliding rear seat on the Max Forward position of the rails (it travels 5.1-inches), there's still nearly two inches more rear seat leg room than in the prior model.

-

Everything else, though, is identical to the X1 the rest of the world gets, including the powertrains. China, though, hasn't embraced diesel fuel for civilians (they prefer to keep oceans of it for the military) so there are no turbodiesel stretched X1s on the books.

-

Instead, the range starts with the front-wheel drive X1 sDrive 18Li with a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder, rises to a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four for the X1 20Li in either front-wheel drive sDrive or all-wheel drive xDrive configurations and tops out at the stronger xDrive 25Li. The three pot has 134 horsepower, the 20Li has 189 in either configuration and the range-topper boasts 228 Datons (that's a Chinese horse breed; try to keep up with these cultural shifts, please), which is the same as the top 2.0-liter unit that goes in the U.S.-market X1 xDrive28i.

-

And if you want a reminder that the biggest market in the world sets the tune for everybody to dance to, BMW says it can't officially release the wheelbase data for the long-wheelbase X1 at the car's unveiling in Beijing, even though it uses the term “long wheelbase” six times on the first page of its press release.

-
--
-

Chinese law says that data can only be released at its official market introduction, which is May 20.

-

Screw that. Its wheelbase is 4.3 inches longer than it is in Europe and America, which makes it 109.4 inches.

Prince: Another Toll Paid on 2016's Road of Heavy Losses

Prince

-

When you're a child, you might not be accepting of things like cauliflower, bedtime, or the lack of the latest, greatest Tonka truck in your life. But a guy swathed in eyeliner and lace on a purple custom Honda CB400A? That's perfectly fine. Totally bad-ass, even. That the man funked as hard as anybody has ever funked, and shredded on an off-brand Telecaster as ridiculously and face-meltingly as anybody has ever shredded on any guitar, made complete sense out of what should've been a tangle of incongruities. It was Prince, after all.

-

The last six months or so has seen America unpack a heavy parcel of meaningful celebrity death. Lemmy Kilmister, David Bowie, Abe Vigoda, Phife Dawg, Harper Lee, Merle Haggard. If you weren't necessarily a metal person, chances are still good that you liked Motörhead. If you liked popular music at all, there's a good chance a piece of Bowie's career resonated. Vigoda's passing shook the jokey foundation of the internet. College students of a certain age held up A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory as a totem. What American hasn't read To Kill a Mockingbird in school? Even the Nashville brosephs Haggard couldn't stand loved the man's oeuvre. After all, ex-con Merle stood as a totem of authenticity. But Prince? Prince is universal in a way that none of the rest were.

-

Musicians of all stripes loved Prince. Thugs loved Prince. The normiest of normcore suburbanites loved Prince. People who couldn't stand Michael Jackson loved Prince. People who worshipped Michael Jackson loved Prince. At some point, you very likely put a Prince composition on a mixtape/CD/playlist given to somebody you wanted to make time with. If you have ever ridden a motorcycle in Minneapolis, you've experienced a “Hey! I'm Prince!” feeling. If you have been to Minneapolis at all, Prince invariably gets mentioned before Mary Tyler Moore, before the Replacements, before Hüsker Dü. Before Bob Dylan, even. Yes, Dylan's from Duluth, but Bob's legacy alone is enough for a whole state to glom onto.

-

I was born in 1975, which means I can scarcely remember a world without Prince. After school, we would dance on the playground to “Let's Go Crazy” and “1999.” We didn't understand most of what he was singing about, but it had a good beat and the man shimmered. The Trans-Am and the Corvette were my favorite cars, and Prince wrote a song about one of them. This, of course, was before the Countach truly slipped into the laser-hued consciousness of young boys sometime around 1985. Even fully in the grip of my Lamborghini obsession, the first time I sat in a Corvette-a white 1964 convertible at McClellan Air Force Base around 1987-was one of the bigger thrills of my young life. The first Vette I ever drove was a freshly restored 1973 with a hot 383 in the nose. It did not feel especially Purple. Instead, it felt a lot like my old 1970 Buick Skylark.

-

At my first 10Best after joining the C/D staff, we had a couple of fresh Stingrays for evaluation. One featured an automatic transmission and chrome wheels, and the other was a Torch Red Z51 manual with black stripes. The former was a good car. The latter was a ridiculous sonofabitch; everything I'd ever wanted a Corvette to be from the driver's seat. I purloined it for the drive to the airport once we were done with testing. Before I left our 10Best base of operations, I stowed the top, connected my phone, and cued up a song. You already know which song. And if you say you wouldn't have done the exact same thing, you're either a liar or you suffer from some perverse hatred of joy.

--

-

Chevrolet posted a tribute image to social media yesterday, a simple studio shot of a red 1963 Sting Ray's split rear window with the words, “Baby, that was much too fast,” above the car's roof. It didn't feel crass. Or gross. Or that GM was in any way trying to cash in on the death of a man who meant so much to so many. Instead, it felt tonally correct. And in an age where the General's advertising is pretty uniformly crummy, the hulking automaker captured what we were all feeling. 57? 57? Even freaking Bowie made it almost to 70, and Prince Rogers Nelson somehow seemed even more ageless than the Thin White Duke.

-

Of course GM was required to pay tribute. He added to the mystique of their marquee automobile in a way that nobody had since the Beach Boys' “Shut Down” in 1963. And let's face it, “Shut Down” is a dorky anthem of adolescent fantasy in which some jackhat in a Sting Ray street-races a dude in a Max Wedge. “Little Red Corvette”? It's about the complex power of sexual allure. Only nerds worry about their pressure plates. Anybody who's ever been pulled home from the bar by a fast new lover, one perhaps wildly out of one's league, can relate to the ambivalent wash of anxiety, determination, and arousal. Advantage: Prince.

-
--
-

Or you can skip all the pointy-headed analysis, climb into a Stingray, crank Prince, rip down a country road with the radio blaring, knowing full well that you are completely and totally that guy-and do it without a care because the experience is exactly as good as it's supposed to be.

-

Prince may have thought farther ahead than most of us, but he was also exceptionally down for the pleasures of right now. And in the days when the eggheads dissect The Purple One's relationship to modern music, modern gender and sexuality, and modern culture in general, it's worth noting that the reason we care so much in the first place is that the man hooked us at the most visceral of levels. And it doesn't get a whole lot more visceral than the right car on the right road, with the right song playing loudly.

Feds Tell Mercedes Parent to Open Emissions Investigation

CARS.COM - Volkswagen isn't the only automaker with diesel woes. At the request of the U.S. Department of Justice, Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler announced that it will investigate its vehicle-emissions systems.

Related: Volkswagen, Regulators Announce Diesel-Car Buyback Plan

The announcement comes seven months after the EPA said it would spot-check emissions across various diesel vehicles in the wake of the Volkswagen Group's diesel emissions cheating scandal. At the time, other automakers - including Mercedes-Benz - told Cars.com that they do not employ systems that cheat on emissions testing, which would be a violation of the Clean Air Act.

Han Tjan, director of North American corporate communications at Daimler, told Cars.com that the company's investigation will look at both diesel and gasoline emissions.

"It's in regards to the whole process of the certification of the exhaust emissions," Tjan said. "They're going to review the certification and emissions process."

In February, the EPA reportedly asked Daimler for information after U.S. owners of Mercedes diesel vehicles filed a class-action lawsuit alleging the presence of "defeat" devices in their cars. At the time, Mercedes told us it considered the lawsuit "unfounded" and said "all our vehicles comply with the legal requirements." Daimler said in a statement that it "is cooperating fully with the authorities" and will "investigate possible indications of irregularities and of course take all necessary actions."

An external counsel will oversee the new internal investigation, Tjan said, but the counsel has yet to be chosen. He declined to say when Daimler expects to finish the investigation or report any results.

Volvo Pledges to Sell 1 Million Electrified Vehicles By 2025: No Way

2016 Volvo XC90 T8 hybrid

-

As Volvo launches its second plug-in hybrid this year, the Chinese-owned Swedish automaker has placed a sales wager: 1 million electrified Volvos worldwide by 2025.

-

Volvo announced in October that it would make a plug-in-hybrid version of every model it sells and launch an all-electric model in 2019 on the SPA platform, which underpins the S90, XC90, and next-gen S60/V60. Now Volvo says it will offer two plug-in-hybrid trims for every model to reach that goal of 1 million units sold over nine years.

-

But that number doesn't align with Volvo's other statements in October, which said that plug-in hybrids would account for roughly 10 percent of its annual car sales starting sometime “early” next decade, or 80,000 cars per year. Even if Volvo reaches that split in 2020 and maintains it, it would need 600,000 sales of the forthcoming all-electric model within just six years. Tesla has managed to sell close to 120,000 Model S sedans over almost four years. Nissan hit the 200,000 mark in December, five years after the Leaf launched. Volvo has had trouble selling the few hundred XC90 T8 plug-in hybrids currently in inventory across the U.S., which range from $70,000 to nearly $90,000. It's difficult for any luxury automaker to move precious metal in high volumes, especially considering that the XC90's electric range barely matches the distance the vehicle can travel on one-half gallon of gasoline.

-
--
-

If Volvo's pledge sounds like President Obama in 2011-when he set a goal to have 1 million electrified cars on U.S. roads by 2015 (by which time the market had absorbed only 400,000)-that's because it's equally unrealistic. Volvo has also pledged to build cars in which no one would die or be seriously injured by 2020. These are laudable goals. Whether they're actually achievable or just encouraging words meant for the ears of shareholders and government regulators is the real question.

2012-14 Mercedes-Benz Diagnostic Software Issue

CARS.COM

The problem: In affected vehicles, a software glitch in the performance system may cause  it not to log failures in the system's memory. If this happens, when techs access the memory to determine where a problem may lie, the fault will not be there for the tech to review, hence diagnosis of the fuel delivery system will be very difficult. Additionally, there may be an inability to delete previous faults, which could lead the tech down a false diagnostic trail.

David Rich, CarMD technical director, said for example that a spark plug failure can snowball from $50 for a part to $400 or more for plug and ignition coil replacement. The CarMD index encourages drivers to heed their Check Engine lights to avert car trouble and maximize fuel economy.

"One of the best ways to minimize cost of ownership and help reduce unforeseen car repairs is to follow a regular maintenance program and take care of small problems as soon as you're aware of them, particularly as vehicles age," Rich said in a statement.

According to the Vehicle Health Index, the top 10 most-common car repairs related to the Check Engine light, followed by their average repair costs, are:

10. Replace evaporative-emissions purge solenoid, $184

9. Replace evaporative-emissions purge control valve, $168

8. Replace spark plug wires and spark plugs, $331

7. Replace mass airflow sensor, $382

6. Replace ignition coils, $236

5. Replace thermostat, $210

4. Tighten or replace fuel cap, $15

3. Replace ignition coils and spark plugs, $390

2. Replace catalytic converter, $1,153

1. Replace oxygen sensor, $249

CarMD's 2016 Vehicle Health Index surveyed more than a million reported repairs from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2015.

Despite the potential for mounting car-repair costs, CarMD determined that the average cost to repair a Check Engine light issue in 2015 was $387. That's down 8 percent from a decade ago when it was $422.

Average costs for Check Engine issues, according to the CarMD study, were also down from 2014, with the Northeast enjoying the biggest decrease by nearly 7 percent to $391. The smallest price break was in the Midwest, where repair costs went down less than 3 percent, though the region remained the cheapest place to have your car fixed at an average cost of $365. Despite enjoying the second-biggest drop of 5 percent, the West remained the most-expensive region for Check Engine repairs at an average $403, followed by the South at $389 with a 3 percent dip.

50th Anniversary Edition Chevrolet Camaro SS to Pace 2016 Indy 500

-

Excepting the one time the goofball Chevrolet SSR convertible pickup was used, a Camaro or Corvette has paced the Indianapolis 500 each of the last 13 years. Next month, it'll be the Camaro's turn as the 2017 SS 50th Anniversary Edition laps the Brickyard.

IndyCar/Nascar/V8 Supercars team owner, former pro driver, and car-dealership magnate Roger Penske will command one of four white Camaro SS coupes for the Indy 500's 100th race. The second-gen Camaro is unchanged for 2017 save for a 50th Anniversary Edition package that will be offered this summer. The package, which includes the RS Appearance kit and a whole lot of other stuff you can read about here, will be available on 2LT and 2SS coupes and convertibles, albeit without the replica decals of recent Camaro pace cars (which paced in 2014, 2011, 2010, and 2009). Substituting the pace car's bright white is a subtle shade of dark gray.

Team Penske's Juan Pablo Montoya won the 2015 Indy 500, marking the outfit's 16th victory-the highest of any team. The Camaro has paced the Indy 500 eight other times, and a General Motors vehicle, including such legendary models like the Oldsmobile Bravada and the Chevrolet Beretta, has led the pack for 38 out of the last 45 years.

How Japan's Earthquakes Could Disrupt U.S. New-Car Availability

CARS.COM - Recent earthquakes in southern Japan have killed dozens and left more than 1,000 injured; they've also hampered automotive production in the country. Toyota says it will conduct "at least a partial suspension" of operations at a number of plants in various stages between April 18 and April 23, according to spokesman Aaron Fowles.

If full production resumes immediately afterward, the effect you'll see on dealer inventory for the listed cars should be light or even imperceptible. But shoppers might see a bigger squeeze if complications arise. Asked if the automaker was confident that production would resume after April 23, Fowles said Toyota is taking the situation "step by step" and will "decide as it comes."

Toyota says the stoppage stems from earthquake-related parts shortages. It could especially impact the automaker's Lexus and Scion divisions, which import from Japan most of the cars they sell in the U.S. Cars.com reviewed Toyota's production documentation for every car it sells in the U.S., as well as plant-by-plant stoppages from the automaker's Sunday announcement. If you're shopping for a Toyota, Lexus or Scion, these models could be affected:

  • Lexus CT
  • Lexus ES
  • Lexus GS
  • Lexus IS
  • Lexus LS
  • Lexus RC
  • Lexus GX
  • Lexus LX
  • Lexus NX
  • Lexus RX
  • Scion iM
  • Scion tC
  • Toyota Mirai
  • Toyota Prius
  • Toyota Prius C
  • Toyota Prius V
  • Toyota 4Runner
  • Toyota RAV4
  • Toyota Land Cruiser

"It's going to take time for us to assess exactly what damage has been done [and] exactly what supplies we're going to be short on," Fowles told Cars.com. "We're trying to make decisions on what we should be suspending production for just on a case-by-case basis."

The cuts shouldn't affect many of Toyota's most-popular models; the automaker assembles cars and trucks such as the Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra in North America.

The Lexus ES, Lexus RX and Toyota RAV4 split production between Japan and North America - Kentucky for ES, and Ontario, Canada, for the RX and RAV4. Even if the production stoppage drags on, it shouldn't affect the RX too much: Automotive News data shows just 9 percent of RX sales in the U.S. this year were from Japan-built vehicles. But RAV4 and ES inventory could face a bigger squeeze, given that 43 percent of RAV4 sales and 57 percent of ES sales came from Japan-built vehicles, per Automotive News.

Toyota doesn't exactly have a glut of current supply to weather a long-term delay. Automotive News says Toyota had a 50-day supply of vehicles on April 1 - 49 days for its Toyota and Scion divisions and 61 days for Lexus. Both figures were below the industry's 65-day average. (Days' supply measures how long it would take to sell all inventory at dealerships, factory lots, ports of entry and in transit at the current sales pace if all production stopped.)

Fowles cautioned that it's "very early on" to say how much, if any, Toyota's current inventory would be affected.

Honda and Mitsubishi told Cars.com that the earthquakes did not affect production of vehicles imported to the U.S., and Nissan said it resumed operations April 18 after assessing damage. Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes said the automaker's "immediate operations are safe [and] well." Subaru spokesman Dominick Infante told us the earthquake-affected areas are far from its assembly plants, and there's "no mention" so far of any production changes.

Tips to Making Custom Floor Pans for your Car

Mark recently decided to take on a resto-mod oddball in a Chevy Corvair. This neglected Chevy bastard-child was rescued from a local scrap yard and had seen some questionable repairs and better days. His first step in the rebuild of the car was getting the structure of the car rebuilt and solid before he started customizing the car. The first area of concern was the floor; or lack of it.

Subaru Updates 2017 Forester's Styling, Safety Features

CARS.COM - The Subaru Forester returns for 2017 with a host of updates that could help address some the previous model's shortcomings. The compact SUV gets tweaked exterior and interior styling, new driver assist technology and improved fuel economy.

Exterior styling changes include a revised front bumper cover and a new hexagonal grille, as well as redesigned headlights. The headlights have a sleeker appearance and Subaru's C-shaped motif, which also appears in the LED taillights. Premium-trim models now get a body-colored rear spoiler previously only on upper trim levels.

Trim levels carry over and include 2.5i base, Premium, Limited and Touring, and 2.0XT Premium and Touring.

Touring models are available for 2017 with an exclusive Sepia Bronze Metallic paintjob. Restyled 17- and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a high-contrast black and machined finish are available on 2.5i Premium and Limited models, and 2.0XT models, respectively.

Inside the cabin are a number of upgrades that could improve an interior feel Cars.com reviewer Bill Jackson called "drab" in his review of the 2016 model. Subaru promises a quieter cabin courtesy of beefed-up soundproofing such as thicker door glass, restructured door seals, additional under-floor insulation and an acoustic windshield.

All Forester trims also get an updated steering wheel design with stereo, Bluetooth and cruise control switches. A Forester-first heated steering wheel is now standard on Touring models along with keyless entry and push-button start. Touring versions offer new perforated Saddle Brown leather-trimmed upholstery with contrasting stitching, as well as matching brown leather-covered door panels and center console lid. In addition, a power liftgate is now available on the 2.5i, while memory seats and automatic climate control are standard across multiple trims.

Powertrains carry over, but Subaru says revisions have improved fuel economy slightly. Forester 2.5i models with a continuously variable automatic transmission now are estimated to get 26/32/28 mpg city/highway/combined compared with the outgoing version's 24/32/27 mpg. In addition, Subaru says its Active Torque Vectoring system, now available on 2.0XT Touring models with the EyeSight system, will improve handling and responsiveness. Moreover, the X-Mode traction assist system is now standard on Premium, Limited and Touring models with the CVT.

Driver assist technology upgrades include an updated version of Subaru's EyeSight forward collision avoidance system, which now has color cameras that provide a greater field of vision, as well as lane keeping assist. Limited and Touring models come standard with blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, as do Premium models equipped with EyeSight. Adaptive headlights with automatic high beams are standard on 2.5i Limited and Touring, and 2.0XT Touring models with EyeSight. Limited and Touring models also include reverse automatic braking, which detects large objects and stops the vehicle if the driver fails to react.

The 2017 Forester is set to hit dealerships in early July. A Subaru spokesman said pricing won't be announced until next month; the outgoing model starts at $23,245 and ranges up to $34,645, including an $850 destination charge.

2017 Subaru Forester Refresh Brings Slightly Different Looks, Torque Vectoring for the Turbo

Most changes to update the Subaru Forester crossover for the 2017 model year are par for the mid-cycle–refresh course, including slightly revised front and rear fascias, a few interior upgrades, and some new active-safety equipment. But Subaru being Subaru, the Forester also sees one upgrade that you won't find on a Toyota RAV4 or a Honda CR-V: the addition of brake-based torque vectoring. READ MORE ››

Are You Afraid of the Dark? Ford's Driverless Cars Aren't

CARS.COM - KITT from the Knight Rider TV show of the '80s was a Pontiac Trans Am, but in the age of autonomous cars the real "night rider" is a Ford Fusion Hybrid. In an announcement today, Ford shed some light on its Fusion autonomous research vehicles' ability to drive in the dark - without the need for headlamps.

Related: Man or Moose? Volvo's Large-Animal Detection Decides, Avoids

The Detroit automaker's light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensor system works with the car's virtual driver software to drive in the black of night, when the traffic fatality rate is triple that of the daytime, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. LIDAR essentially renders headlights, and for that matter sunlight, obsolete, where driving is concerned. It also doesn't rely on cameras detecting the painted lines on the road to function just as well at night as during the day, Ford said.

"It's an important development, in that it shows that even without cameras, which rely on light, Ford's LIDAR - working with the car's virtual driver software - is robust enough to steer flawlessly around winding roads," the automaker said in a statement. "While it's ideal to have all three modes of sensors - radars, cameras and LIDAR - the latter can function independently on roads without stoplights."

The system uses high-resolution 3-D maps that contain info about the road, road markings, geography, topography and landmarks such as signs, buildings and trees. It sends out 2.8 million laser pulses a second to pinpoint itself on a real-time map, and uses additional radar data to round out its sensing capability.

Researchers recently tested the system at Ford's Arizona Proving Ground. Engineers watched through night-vision goggles from both inside and outside the car. The goggles displayed infrared laser beams projected around the vehicle as it drove, precisely showing its every move.

"Inside the car, I could feel it moving, but when I looked out the window, I only saw darkness," Ford researcher Wayne Williams said in a statement. "As I rode in the back seat, I was following the car's progression in real time using computer monitoring. Sure enough, it stayed precisely on track along those winding roads."

Ford said it plans to triple its autonomous vehicle test fleet this year to about 30 cars operating on California, Arizona and Michigan roads.

Ford GT Order Banks Open, 500 Cars Up For Grabs

2017 Ford GT

-

The official ordering process opens today for the Ford GT. Potential customers will want to get on over to FordGT.com to fill out their applications-you didn't think an open checkbook would be all you'd need, did you?

-

In announcing the opening of its order banks, Ford also revealed just how limited production of its supercar will be: Only 250 will be available this year and 250 next year. Whether Ford will build more after that is open to interpretation; the company is saying only that this “initial ordering period,” which goes from April 13 to May 12, “will cover the first two years of production-500 vehicles.”

-

Nor is Ford providing an MSRP for the new GT beyond saying that the starting price will be in the “mid-$400,000s” (plus destination and delivery). Buyers whose applications are approved “will work with the new Ford GT Concierge Service” to complete the transaction, including taking delivery at a dealer-although it's unclear whether and how price negotiations would work.

-

-

Would-be buyers whose applications are rejected will have to join the rest of us, and console themselves with a fantasy build. You need not pay anything to play with the configurator, choosing among the eight exterior colors, seven stripe colors, and various interior treatments and wheel designs, all while dreaming of what might have been.
