Recall Alert: 2016 Tesla Model X

CARS.COM

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 2,700 Model X SUVs built before March 26, 2016

The Problem: Reuters is reporting that a faulty locking hinge in the third-row seats could allow the seats to fall forward in a crash, increasing the risk of an injury in an accident. The automaker said it's recalling the seats after they failed a strength test in Europe. The Model X passed U.S. seat-strength tests, but Europe's are more stringent, according to Reuters.

The Fix: Owners will have their seats replaced for free. The repair will replace both third-row seats.

What Owners Should Do: Tesla will begin notifying owners today. Owners can call the automaker at 877-798-3752 for more info.

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Driven: Is the Better Boxster a Better Sports Car?

2017-Porsche-718-Boxster-Boxster-S-PLACEMENT
-It's subtle, but it's there. Listen carefully when chugging along at low speed in Porsche's new flat-four–powered 718 Boxster and you'll recognize what you hear. Sure, it's damped by water jackets and a turbo, distinctly lacking mechanical clatter and subdued by decades of internal combustion progress, but there's no denying the fundamental thrum of the thing. Under it all is the undeniable lope of an air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. READ MORE ››

BMW Puts Luxury Within Reach With ReachNow Car-Sharing Service

CARS.COM - Wouldn't it be cool if you saw a luxury vehicle parked on the street and you could just take it - without the subsequent hassle of, say, a police chase and felony charges? Soon in 10 cities across North America you will be able to just that, and if you're in Seattle you can do it right now, as BMW launches its brand-new car-sharing service, ReachNow.

BMW says ReachNow expands on its existing European model of "free-floating car sharing" and "on-demand mobility." An initial fleet of 370 vehicles, including the BMW i3 electric car, 3 Series sedan and Mini Hardtop, are available for immediate use via smartphone reservation today on the streets of Seattle, where the service also will be headquartered.

All would-be users need to do, the luxury automaker explained, is download the ReachNow app on Apple's App Store or Google Play and register. They then can locate and book the nearest available car via the app and return it to any legal parking space on the street within a designated area.

"ReachNow is designed to provide drivers with an experience that is as convenient as owning a car," BMW said in a statement. "The user experience is premium, with fast registration and an almost instant approval process - in 2 minutes or less - a first for any car-sharing service."

BMW said the program is tailored to users who want the instant gratification of the car-ownership experience without the associated expense. After a one-time, lifetime registration fee of $39, rates are 49 cents a minute while a car is in use and 30 cents a minute while parked; rates cap at $50 for three hours, $80 for 12 hours and $110 for 24 hours. Prices include insurance, fuel and parking at public meters, as well as all taxes and fees.

The automaker said it plans to expand the program to three more cities this year, and a total of 10 later. Gradually expanding services, BMW said, will include delivery of car-sharing vehicles, airport availability, longer-term rentals, car-sharing for residential and corporate complexes, chauffeur services and the ability to rent out your own vehicle for sharing.

BMW is the latest automaker to join the car-sharing pool as competition from car- and ride-sharing services such as Zipcar and Uber proliferate. Earlier this year, GM announced that it had made a half-billion-dollar investment in Lyft for its new car-sharing service, Maven. Last month, GM announced the launch of Express Drive in Chicago - with plans to later expand to Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and beyond - allowing people to rent vehicles from the automaker to drive for the Lyft ride-sharing service.

Recall Alert: 2016 Toyota RAV4 and 2016 Lexus RX 350, ES 350

CARS.COM

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 4,000 model-year 2016 Toyota RAV4 SUVs, 90 model-year 2016 RX 350 SUVs and 12,000 model-year 2016 ES 350 sedans

The Problem: The affected vehicles have a potential issue with the  brake actuator assembly that enables enhanced brake control functions including the anti-lock braking, traction control and vehicle stability control systems. A component inside the actuator could have been damaged during manufacturing and could prevent the actuator from operating properly. This could cause a loss of vehicle stability control, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect the serial number of the Brake Actuator and replace actuators assembled during a certain production period.

What Owners Should Do: Toyota has not yet announced an owner notification schedule. Owners can call Toyota at 800-331-4331, Lexus at 800-255-3987, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov, for more info.

No Need to Argue: Lexus to Start No-Haggle Pricing

CARS.COM - Nearly a dozen Lexus dealerships are planning to launch no-haggle pricing next month. The move is part of a pilot program to test the viability of a system of selling and buying cars pioneered by GM with Saturn before it folded the brand seven years ago.

According to the Detroit News, Lexus parent Toyota is experimenting with no-haggle pricing at 11 of the luxury brand's 236 U.S. dealerships, in part to attract younger buyers who see bargaining with a car salesman as outdated and time-consuming. A car-buying survey last year showed that 44 percent of consumers don't want to negotiate vehicle price, and that haggling was their No. 1 frustration, the newspaper reported.

Toyota also has experimented with a form of no-haggle selling with its youth-oriented Scion brand's Pure Price system.

While a large swath of consumers may prefer not to argue over price, Jeff Bracken, Lexus group vice president and general manager, said many of the brand's dealers are "philosophically opposed" and unwilling to participate.
