Genesis Unveils G80 Sport, Plans Electric Car Introduction

CARS.COM - Hyundai's luxury brand, Genesis, has officially unveiled the second model in its new lineup. Following the introduction of the 2017 G90 sedan (formerly known as the Hyundai Equus) at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, it has now unveiled the new 2017 G80 at the Busan International Motor Show in South Korea.

Specifically, the new G80 Sport, a trim and color package that's aimed at injecting a little life into the smooth, and staid, G80 (née Hyundai Genesis) sedan. There's no word yet on whether the Sport trim of the G80 will be coming to the U.S. market, but it seems a reasonable assumption given that the Sport reportedly is simply a wheel, trim and color package; the 3.8-liter V-6 and turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 available in the South Korean market are said to be unmodified. The company also announced that a diesel-powered variant would be added to the G80 lineup, but again no word on whether this will make it to North America.

In addition to the new G80, Genesis Senior Vice President Manfred Fitzgerald told Automotive News that the luxury brand will be exploring alternative propulsion methods as well, and plans to add a pure electric vehicle to the Genesis lineup in the future. No details were provided, but the former Lamborghini director affirmed his belief that EVs are the eventual way of the future and that Genesis would not be left out.
