Au Revoir, Minivan: BraunAbility MXV Is a Wheelchair-Accessible Ford Explorer

2016 BraunAbility MXV

As far as wheelchair-accessible personal transport goes, the minivan has been king for as long as there have been accessible minivans. We have a feeling that might be about to change, as BraunaAility is releasing their new MXV, an Explorer-based machine with a sliding door and side-mounted ramp.

The Indiana company notes that it’s their first volume-production SUV project, set to begin running off of their Winamac line next month and ready for sale in the fall. The pertinents include a 54-inch door height, a 28-inch ramp width, a sliding shifter for increased space, and a key fob that operates both the door and the ramp. BraunAbility says that with the middle row removed, most power wheelchairs will fit.

Powered by Ford’s 3.5-liter naturally aspirated six, the extra weight knocks down the non-EcoBoost Explorer’s EPA ratings from 19 city/28 highway to 17/24 mpg. The MXV is still capable of towing 5000 pounds, in case you’re like Doug Henry and need to haul your dirt bikes to the track or trail.
