CARS.COM - The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the redesigned 2016 BMW X1 SUV a Top Safety Pick Plus, a significant improvement over the outgoing model's score.
IIHS reports that the compact SUV's redesign boosted its performance to a top score of good in the rigorous small overlap front crash test, which simulates a collision with a pole or a partial head-on crash. The 2015 X1 was rated marginal in that test.

IIHS noted that in this test, the X1's "driver's space was maintained reasonably well, with maximum intrusion of about 4 inches at the lower door hinge pillar and at the instrument panel." In the same test, the previous model allowed footwell intrusion of 16 inches, trapping the crash dummy's foot.
The new model matched its predecessor's top scores of good in moderate front overlap, side, roof strength and head restraints/seats crash tests. The 2016 model's newly available front crash prevention system got the second-highest score of advanced.
To qualify for Top Safety Pick Plus, a vehicle must have good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests, plus have an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating.
Against the competition, the X1 comes out ahead. The 2016 Audi Q3 is a Top Safety Pick; the compact SUV scored good in IIHS' crash tests but does not have an available crash prevention system. IIHS has not yet tested the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 compact SUV.
