Five years ago, when Volkswagen brought out the current Jetta, VW miscalculated. It offered the strong-selling compact sedan in essentially two versions: Entry-level models were fitted with naturally aspirated engines, an inexpensive beam-axle rear suspension, and a basic electronic architecture.
