Everybody likes Oktoberfest! There’s traditional German music and decorations, schnitzel, and, of course, beer! BMW knows what’s up, and commissioned a one-off M3 to be painted in a “Münchner Wirte” livery to celebrate Oktoberfest in Munich this year. If you’re not familiar with Münchner Wirte, it means “Munich hosts,” and a similar livery was first applied to a M1 Procar racer more than 30 years ago. Blue-and-white cords appear to be draped over the car, while other Münchner Wirte detailing includes paintings of quaint German scenes—and yes, there is one depiction of a beer tent. Because Oktoberfest.

In a rather cool turn of events, BMW had Walter Maurer, the artist responsible for the classic M1 Procar’s Münchner Wirte paint job 34 years ago—which he did by hand—handle the new M3’s livery. According to BMW, the decorations include a “Bavarian-style façade painting and blue and white twisted cords, along with depictions of Munich landmarks (such as the Olympic Stadium, Siegestor, Frauenkirche church, and BMW’s headquarters—the “four-cylinder” building), a roast chestnut seller, and the Wiesn-Schänke beer tent at the Oktoberfest.” It isn’t specifically mentioned whether or not this custom M3 counts as a BMW Art Car, or if it will remain a mere BMW with art on it. Either way, it’s a neat little piece of hometown love for BMW, which calls Munich its world headquarters.
