2016 Chevrolet Camaro Starts at $26,695; $37K for V-8 Camaro SS

Chevrolet released pricing today for the redesigned 2016 Camaro coupe, which should hit dealers in November at a starting price of $26,695, including destination. That makes the price of entry $1,995 more over the base price of a 2015 Camaro, though GM did away with the 1LS/2LS trim levels in the process. The base 2016 Camaro is now the 1LT, and it's $305 less than the 2015 Camaro 1LT.

However, that $26,695 price is for the standard 275-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is new for this model. But the cars hitting dealers in November will only be equipped with the optional V-6 engine, at a higher price that GM hasn't released yet. The turbocharged versions will go on sale in the first quarter of 2016.

Other trims include the 2LT, 1SS and 2SS. As you'd expect, both SS trims have GM's small-block LT1 6.2-liter V-8, good now for 455 hp and 455 pounds-feet of torque. The 1SS starts at $37,295, including destination; that's $2,795 more than the less-powerful 2015 Camaro 1SS, and it's also thousands more than the rival Dodge Challenger R/T and Ford Mustang GT.

GM did not release pricing for the 2LT, 2SS or any Camaro convertible; the drop-tops arrive at the tail end of 2015 or early 2016. We are told by GM that the 2SS coupe will top out in the mid-$40,000 range.

GM promises all sorts of new equipment on the Camaro, which looks to have comparable or better standard features than the rival 2016 Challenger ($1,295 more) or 2016 Mustang ($1,995 less). Among the standard features on the 2016 Camaro:

  • Automatic climate control (single zone)
  • Seven-inch MyLink touch-screen stereo with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a USB port, Bluetooth phone/audio and 12 months' satellite radio
  • Backup camera
  • Keyless access with push-button start
  • Dual power seats (eight-way driver, six-way passenger)
  • A leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Eighteen-inch alloy wheels

The 2LT models add a larger MyLink touch-screen (8 inches) with similar capabilities but more voice recognition. They also get heated and ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control and Bose premium audio.

The V-8 Camaro 1SS loses the interior features but adds 20-inch rims, a rear spoiler, high-intensity-discharge headlights, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, a performance suspension and various heavy-duty mechanicals. The 2SS returns to 2LT luxury spec; it also gets a heated steering wheel.

Other options include an adaptive suspension, dual-mode exhaust, factory navigation and a moonroof.

It bears mention that many lower trims have option packages with certain features from higher trims. Among them is the Camaro's RS appearance package, which returns for LT models with 20-inch rims, HID lights and unique bodywork.

All variants start with a six-speed manual transmission. The paddle-shifting eight-speed automatic is optional but when equipped is tied with remote start across the board. If you want to check out the panoply of colors and accessories, GM has a Camaro Visualizer at Chevrolet.com.
