2017 Kia Sportage Breaks Free, Shows Off New Face

Kia’s all-new Sportage crossover will make its full, specifications-and-details debut at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show in September, but the automaker is releasing photos of the production model a few weeks early. Like pretty much every other modern Kia, the new Sportage looks fresh, handsome, and upscale.

Designed under the watch of Hyundai-Kia’s head of design, Peter Schreyer, the Sportage carries over a few styling cues from the old model, namely the reflectors/backup lights fitted to the rear bumper, the graceful sweep of the side windows’ profile, the placement of the rear license-plate, and the thin lighting units.

Up front, the arrangement of the headlights, grille, fog lights, and other bits is decidedly Peugeot in execution, which strikes us as more than a little odd. It’s not overtly unattractive, but the stacked front-end elements (headlights above grille above fog lights above intake . . .) is a bit, um, French, and we’re not sure it represents the same solid step forward taken by the rest of the Sportage’s look. The best thing we can say about the new face is that it brings the Sportage visually in line with the Soul, the tall hatchback that Kia sends into effective combat against stuff like the Nissan Juke, Honda HR-V, and other compact crossovers. We’ll know more about the 2017 Sportage, including its engine choices, from the Frankfurt show.
