It's been a decade since Toyota last redesigned its best-selling midsize pickup truck — not that Tacoma buyers seemed to mind much judging by its continued popularity. But the wait is over as of the 2016 model year, and the automaker has taken a conservative approach to updating the 20-year-old Tacoma, making methodical improvements while keenly observing the old "if-it-ain't-broke ..." rule.
Our colleagues at PickupTrucks.com recently got to test the new Tacoma's SR5, TRD and Limited trim levels. The pickup's exterior gets a sportier makeover, bringing its look more in line with the half-ton Tundra with profile-defining cut lines, a reshaped front grille and bigger squared wheel-well openings. The interior, meanwhile, gets a more extensive overhaul, boasting redesigned seats, dashboard and console. That's, of course, in addition to an all-new 3.5-liter V-6 engine that boosts horsepower over the 4.0-liter V-6 it replaces.
