2017 Audi Q7 Starts at $55,750

Prices for the redesigned 2017 Audi Q7 crossover SUV, set to go on sale in early 2016, start at $55,750 for the Premium model, a hefty $6,525 more than the base price of the outgoing 2015 version (there is no 2016 Q7); all prices include destination.

The Premium Plus model starts at $59,750 and the Prestige model at $65,250. Audi unveiled the 2017 Q7 at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The first-generation Q7 debuted as a 2007 model, so Audi will finally have a fresh face to compete with luxury SUVs such as the Acura MDX and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

The new Q7 has a three-row, seven-passenger layout like the previous generation, but it is about 475 pounds lighter, has more wagonlike styling and is slightly smaller on the outside while roomier inside. Much of the weight savings come from using aluminum for the doors, front fenders, hood and rear hatch as well as some suspension components.

Initially, the only engine available is a 333-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 gas engine that teams with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive on all models.

The lineup was to include a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel, but that engine has been put on hold because of the ongoing investigations into the diesel emissions scandal affecting Audi and parent company Volkswagen. The EPA has alleged that the V-6 diesel has illegal software that can defeat emissions controls like the software in VW's four-cylinder diesels. Volkswagen has denied the allegation.

Among new standard features that have helped boost the base price are front and rear collision warning; pedestrian, stationary and turning vehicle detection; automatic braking for impending frontal collisions; and rear cross-traffic alert. An updated Audi connect infotainment system includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration and a stolen vehicle locator. A new 12.3-inch display that Audi calls a "virtual cockpit" is available and can be operated by controls on the center console or steering wheel.

A standard drive-mode menu allows drivers to choose from Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Offroad and Individual settings. Q7s with the optional air suspension have two additional settings that raise the ride height from just less than an inch to around 2 1/3 inches.
