Volkswagen Adds Turbocharged 1.4-Liter to 2016 Jetta Lineup

For 2016, the GLI model won't be the only change to the Volkswagen Jetta lineup. A new turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine will live under the hoods of Jetta S and SE models for 2016. While engine size is down, power and fuel economy are up over the 2.0-liter four-cylinder it replaces.

The smaller engine is more potent than the outgoing naturally aspirated 2.0-liter, which made 115 horsepower, and it's more efficient with a manufacturer-estimated 39 mpg highway rating when paired with the six-speed automatic transmission. The outgoing 2.0-liter only managed an unimpressive 34 mpg highway.

The Jetta SE's 170-hp, turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder is also getting the boot in favor of the 1.4-liter, which is just slightly more efficient than the outgoing 1.8-liter's 37 mpg highway rating. Manual-transmission aficionados can choose the 1.4-liter with a five-speed manual transmission.

Jettas with the new engine go on sale in late August or early September.
