With the SEMA show rapidly approaching, manufacturers are celebrating the concept vehicles they’ve farmed out to aftermarket firms for customization. Ford, always a heavy presence at the show, will have 50 vehicles on display this year. Here, for your edification, are three examples of Ford’s Edge and Explorer crossovers, reimagined by Tjin Edition, Webasto, Vaccar, Cars by Kris, MAD Industries, and the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association.
-The Tjin Edition Edge Sport (at top) features an Air Lift air suspension that drops the Edge over ADV.1 22-inch wheels shod with Falken Ziex 265/40 tires. Behind the wheels are Baer 6S brakes. In an effort to enhance the Edge’s go factor, a Unique Fabrication front-mount intercooler chills the turbocharger, while a Motive downpipe evacuates the spent gases through a Magnaflow exhaust system. The whole thing’s swathed in a shade of Axalta paint called Clipper Blue.
--Webasto’s machine is called “Ignition.” Which, given the company’s warming-stuff legacy, is rather obvious. They would like you to know that their Edge is Brad Keselowski tested and approved. What won the NASCAR racer’s stamp, beyond what we presume was a fistful of sponsorship dollars? Extra whomp courtesy of a JMS boost controller and throttle enhancer, an MRT axle-back exhaust, a reflash courtesy of SCT Performance, a K&N filter, Rotora brakes with ceramic pads and stainless lines, and AG Luxury 22-by-9-inch wheels wearing Toyo Proxes rubber. On top is a Webasto sunroof, while down low the Edge features a Sankauer Composite Technologies carbon-fiber splitter, side sills, and rear diffuser.
--Vaccar’s Edge Sport is sprayed in a Glasurit two-tone paint job featuring a matte-silver look with orange accents. Riding on an Air Lift suspension, Vaccar’s Edge features a prototype true-dual exhaust system with Flowmaster HP-2 mufflers. Wheels are Rovos Pretoria 22-by-10.5-inch models, wrapped in Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 rubber. It’s finished off with Auto Meter gauges and a custom Vaccar badge set.
--All Star Performance attempts to inject a measure of utility into the Explorer by equipping it with a 2.5-inch lift kit from Traxda, ADV.1 20×11” wheels with 305-section-width Toyo A/T II tires, Baer 6S calipers and rotors, a Thule rooftop basket, a Vortech intercooler, and Magnaflow pipes. Wurton LED bars light things up front and rear, and the whole thing’s finished in Axalta paint.
--The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, as is their wont, went the opposite direction with their Explorer spraying it in a golden PPG hue, tinting the windows, adding a push bar and air dam from Dominator Street Rods, doing up the interior in Katzkin leather, and pumping sound through a Kicker system. The Goodguys Explorer rolls on 20” B-Forged wheels with red-line Nitto 275/50 tires. Airaid supplied the intake, while the exhaust exits through Flowmaster pipes.
--The Cars by Kris entrant, named Wanderlust, embraces the adventuresome side of the Explorer, rocking a top box, Wilwood brakes, an ECU tune by Leading Edge Tuning, and a CGS exhaust. Unlike the All-Star Explorer, Wanderlust features a drop instead of a lift, perhaps more in line with the Explorer’s on-road-oriented nature. The body has been flared over 24-by-11-inch Triumph Forged wheels with Toyo Proxes STII 295/30 tires.
--Ford says, “The MAD Industries Explorer Sport embraces today’s luxury urban lifestyle.” Translation: Eight years from now, you’ll see a scraped/battered/oxidized version of this thing outside your local title-loan emporium. But in its brand-spankin’-new state, it rides on Niche 24-inch wheels “influenced by today’s fashion trends.” Eibach’s Pro-Plus Performance handling package presumably improves cornering performance. Paint is R-M Onyx Waterborne in Pure White with Jet Black accents. And in case somebody in the urban jungle feels compelled to hork your luxury ride, it’s equipped with an Enfotrace GPS tracking system.
