Toyota is recalling 423,456 RAV4 crossovers for water-clogged windshield wipers, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
--
Channels under the windshield cowl that normally drain excess water may deform over time due to misaligned pin connectors and allow the water to pool, which may then drip onto the joint connecting the windshield wiper motor to the linkage. The joint may rust and fail to move the wiper arm, leaving the windshield, well, wet. The problem affects 2009-2012 RAV4 models built in Canada, including 2497 of the short-lived 2012-2014 RAV4 EV. Toyota had investigated the problem off and on between May 2012 and August 2015 and found 32 warranty claims, mostly in the northern states and Canada.

Dealers will install new water channels, wiper arms with protective covers over the joints, and retainer rings to prevent the arms from separating from the motors. The recall begins in mid-November.
