Purple is just one of those colors, a hue that rarely looks natural on any vehicle that’s not an early 1990s American automotive product. Got a purple Ford Festiva? Great! How about a purple Dodge Stratus? Odd, but it works. And that grape-colored Cavalier? A modern classic that epitomizes an era. Now how about the McLaren 570S? You know what, let’s paint the picture with a richer set of colors, shall we? How about a purple McLaren 570S on the preternaturally green lawns of Pebble Beach?
--It’s a bit strange, but then McLaren probably intended it to be that way. The special color—applied to a “one-off” 570S—needs to grab viewers’ attention in order for McLaren’s Special Operations crew to get some exposure at the Pebble Beach automotive bacchanal. McLaren Special Operations (MSO) handles all custom requests, and it spits out a bizarre or special McLaren now and again seemingly to catch folks eyeballs poppin’. Previous stabs at this attention prostitution have been attractive; this purple one is a bit of a mixed bag. McLaren calls the car’s color “Mauvine Blue,” a modification of the word “mauve” (a purple-y color). Apparently, the car’s only other upgrades are a Carbon Black leather interior with body-color accents.

From the sound of things, the 570S’s 562-hp twin-turbo V-8 goes unchanged, so it moves this McLaren through the atmosphere about the same as it would a 570S in any other color, albeit with more embarrassment. The special 570S Barney Edition will be joined on the lawns of Pebble Beach this coming weekend by a second 570S wearing a more McLaren-appropriate orange paint job and a bunch of typical MSO body accessories. Will it garner more attention than this one? Unlikely, and that’s exactly why this preposterously purple McLaren should prove quite successful for MSO.
