JSwain: 2016 New York Auto Show What You Missed: Day One

CARS.COM — So that's where all those exciting debuts were hiding during the 2016 Chicago Auto Show — in New York! On just the first day of the 2016 New York International Auto Show our car cup runneth over already. Cars.com's on-the-scene news team already has covered 20 major reveals live from the show floor, and we're just getting started.

Some of the splashier reveals were in the performance and hybrid-electric categories. Among sports cars, the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder and 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF dazzled with their droptops. The hardtop R8 got a soft-top while the soft-top Miata got a hardtop. Both tops, of course, come down for maximum enjoyment of the performance-driving experience.

The convertibles were joined by the refreshed-for-2017 Nissan GT-R supercar; the 2017 Toyota 86, newly rebranded from the defunct Scion FR-S; and the all-new 2017 Maserati Levante, the exotic sports car manufacturer's first foray into the growing performance SUV market.

Balancing things out on the fuel-consumption front were the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq and 2017 Toyota Prius Prime. The Ioniq is actually a trio of all-new hybrid/electric cars with three different fuel-sipping powertrains, while the Prime is the Prius' new plug-in-hybrid version that is said to double its electric-only range and improve its fuel economy by more than a quarter.
