CARS.COM - If we'd known about the Volvo XC90 Excellence earlier, it almost certainly would've made Cars.com's list of Guilt-Free SUVs - and it definitely would've ranked among the Best Cars for a Netflix and Chill. While maybe not quite as over-the-top as the single-family-house-priced-and-appointed 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600, the XC90 Excellence excels in excess and efficiency.

The Excellence trim, now making its U.S. debut at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, will be available in limited quantities this summer starting at $105,895, including destination. That's more than twice as much as the starting price for the regular 2016 XC90, but for the extra dough buyers will get ... three fewer seats.
"With just four seats instead of seven the additional space is utilized to offer a first-class automotive experience that begins with broad, spacious individual reclining rear seats complete with massage, ventilation and increased legroom, as well as a retractable control touch-screen, folding tables, a refrigerator with bottle and glass holders, a heating/cooling cupholder and handmade crystal glasses from leading Swedish glass design company, Orrefors," Volvo said in a statement.
Other luxurious interior features include Nappa leather surfaces, open-pore wood trim and a premium 20-speaker sound system. The entire seating area is bisected by an oversized console that stretches front to back, and is closed off from the cargo area by a partition that Volvo says improves cabin quietness.
But amid all of the decadence inside, under the hood is a fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain. The Excellence is equipped with a plug-in hybrid electric system that makes 400 horsepower and 472 pounds-feet of torque while getting an EPA estimated 54 mpg-equivalent on the highway. The system combines the forces of a turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine with an 87-hp electric motor to power all four wheels.
Volvo said the Excellence represents a level of luxury not previously seen in its offerings.
"It brings together fantastic materials, uncompromising safety and performance into an amazing package," Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo Car USA president and CEO, said in a statement. "This car exposes Volvo to a new type of buyer."
